Waste Disposal

Health Safety and Environment coordinates all waste disposal through their Hazardous Materials Management system. HSE has developed a flow chart to assist in determining the appropriate form of disposal.

Chemical Waste, Liquid

  • Fill out waste tag: chemical waste tag
    • Start with largest component first writing full name of chemical
    • Indicate % composition (not Molar concentrations)
    • eg. 80% methanol, 15% water, 5% ethanol with traces of gold (must add up to 100%)
  • Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System

Things to remember:

  • Ensure all waste is properly labeled
  • Indicate room and location of pickup in waste inventory system
  • Print off and attach waste authorization form which is emailed to you once your waste request has been accepted

Chemically Contaminated Waste, Solid

  • Place solid waste in pail provided by HSE
    • No liquids
    • No powders. Powders must be sealed in a ziploc bag prior to disposal
    • No sharps
  • Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System

Fill out waste tag: biological waste tag

Glass Waste

  • Segregate contaminated glass from clean glass waste and place in appropriate bucket provided by HSE
    • Chemically contaminated solid waste – blue bucket
    • Clean glass waste – green bucket
    • Contaminated glass waste – white bucket
  • Submit waste request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System
